Director of Fermentation Process Development

Manus Bio is a next-generation industrial biotechnology company headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts that produces plant-based ingredients.  We use a variety of patented and proprietary technologies to engineer microbes for the production of specialty chemicals, such as food ingredients, agricultural chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.  We are seeking a highly motivated Director of Fermentation Process Development to lead the design, execution, and scale-up of novel microbial fermentation-based processes to produce various natural products. The ideal candidate will have experience in microbial fermentation process development from lab to manufacturing scale and exhibit a high degree of flexibility, creativity, and initiative to achieve milestones and goals. This person will be expected to play an integral role in leading Manus Bio’s multi-disciplinary process development and manufacturing team located in Augusta, GA.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the fermentation development team, develop clear goals and work plans, and monitor progress towards company objectives.
  • Lead the design, execution, and analysis of critical fermentation process development experiments to advance corporate projects and goals.  Experiments will be conducted at a variety of scales, ranging from bench to manufacturing scale.
  • Manage the evaluation of strains to support the R&D team in their strain development /optimization efforts.
  • Lead the development of representative lab and pilot scale models for industrial scale fermentation processes.
  • Contribute to the company's intellectual property portfolio, author publications in the scientific literature, and present at industry conferences.

 Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering/Microbiology or a related discipline with 10+ years of postdoctoral experience (or equivalent industrial experience) in a research and development environment.
  • Expertise in industrial microbial fermentation process development and scale-up
  • Experience in leading, training, and mentoring high-performing teams
  • Experience with manufacturing plant operations is a plus
