Fermentation Process Development Engineer

Manus Bio is a next-generation industrial biotechnology company headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts that produces plant-based ingredients.  We use a variety of patented and proprietary technologies to engineer microbes for the production of specialty chemicals, such as food ingredients, agricultural chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.  We are seeking a highly motivated Fermentation Process Development Engineer to design, execute, and scale-up novel microbial fermentation-based processes to produce various natural products. The ideal candidate will be experienced in media design and microbial fermentation process development in both shake flask and various fermentor scales. This hands-on position requires a desire and ability to work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as the demonstration of a high degree of flexibility, creativity, and initiative applied to the various duties and aspects of the position. This person will be expected to play an integral part of Manus Bio’s process development team located in Augusta, GA.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, test, and optimize fermentation conditions and parameters for the production of complex natural products.
  • Apply knowledge of microbial physiology, biochemistry, metabolism, and process development to improve titer, yield, and productivity of engineered strains.
  • Ensure that process development outcomes deliver against targeted commercial metrics and milestones.
  • Facilitate the transfer of technology and processes developed in the lab to pilot and commercial manufacturing
  • Work collaboratively with the R&D team to evaluate strains and provide feedback on strain performance
  • Communicate results of experiments with colleagues

 Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D/MS. in (Bio)Chemical Engineering, Metabolic Engineering, Microbiology, or related field with 3+ years industrial experience
  • Hands-on experience in operating fermentors and improving industrial fermentation processes.
  • Expertise in bacterial fermentation optimization, especially E. coli fermentations. In-depth understanding of E. coli physiology is a plus
  • Experience in analytical equipment like NOVA bioanalyzer, YSI, HPLC, GC-FID and GC-MS etc.
  • Experience with downstream processing is a plus
