Manus Bio is a next-generation industrial biotechnology company headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts that produces plant-based ingredients.  We use a variety of patented and proprietary technologies to engineer microbes for the production of specialty chemicals, such as food ingredients, agricultural chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.  We are seeking a highly motivated Senior/Principal Downstream Process Development Engineer/Scientist to design, execute, and scale-up novel recovery processes to separate and purify various natural products from fermentation-based processes. The ideal candidate will be experienced in the separation of multiphasic mixtures utilizing a variety of mechanical, chemical, and other relevant unit operations. A foundational understating of thermodynamics and kinetics is highly desirable. An exceptional candidate will have a well-developed understanding of surface chemistry, phase change thermodynamics, and the relevant kinetics that drive these phenomena. This hands-on position requires a desire and ability to work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as the demonstration of a high degree of flexibility, creativity, and initiative applied to the various duties and aspects of the position. This person will be expected to play an integral part of Manus Bio’s process development team located in Augusta, GA.

  • Design, analyze, and optimize critical product recovery unit operations associated with Manus Bio’s unique fermentation process.
  • Utilize a variety of relevant techniques and unit operations (centrifugation, filtration, evaporation, crystallization, distillation, etc.) in developing cost effective separation processes to recover products from complex fermentation broth.
  • Contribute to the scale up activities and prepare tech transfer related documents (e.g. process description, process flow diagram, etc.)
  • Develop kinetic models for relevant chemistries occurring in various unit operations – from designed to unexpected (but observed) chemistries.
  • Propose the integration of 21 st century technologies and unit operations not currently existing at our facility.
  • Contribute to the design of novel unit operations technologies made possible by recent advances in science and engineering.
  • Keep abreast of current literature and techniques in separation technology and their potential application to Manus Bio’s internal projects.
  • Contribute to the company's intellectual property (IP) portfolio and assist on preparation of patent applications.
  • Analyze, write up, and present experimental results to others in the company to expedite the development of our integrated product development in a collaborative team environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering/Chemistry or a related discipline with 10 or more years of postdoctoral or industrial experience in a research and development environment.
  • B.S. or M.S. level candidates with additional relevant industrial experience will also receive consideration.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in equilibrium separations, particularly fractionation; experience with key downstream unit operations such as centrifugation, filtration, evaporation, crystallization, etc.
  • Experience with downstream process scale-up for commercial manufacturing.
  • Familiarity in Process / Utility Flow diagrams (PFD/UFD), Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs), and Equipment / Instrument specifications is a plus.
  • Good understanding of analytical techniques (GC/LC) and fermentation bioprocess is highly desirable.
