Manus Bio is a next-generation industrial biotechnology company headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts that produces plant-based ingredients.  We use a variety of patented and proprietary technologies for engineering microbes for the production of specialty chemicals, such as food ingredients, agricultural chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.  We are seeking a motivated individual for a 6 month Co-Op position from January to June 2022 to support activities related to protein and metabolic engineering, molecular biology, and synthetic biology/genetic tool development.  With guided mentorship and training, this person will be expected to take on a scientific project with direct relevance to and impact on Manus Bio’s R&D platform.  Outstanding individuals may be offered a full-time role at the end of the Co-Op period.

General Responsibilities (may vary based on project):

  • Develop new synthetic biology tools or assays for metabolic and protein engineering
  • Construct, test, and optimize enzymes or pathways using various metabolic engineering and synthetic biology tools
  • Apply knowledge of microbial physiology, biochemistry, and metabolism to improve titers, yields, and productivity of engineered strains
  • Characterize strains by fermentation and perform analytical assays to quantify natural product secondary metabolites, intracellular/extracellular metabolites, and proteins
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary scientific team to implement experimental plans and achieve project goals
  • Communicate results of experiments with colleagues

 Required Qualifications:

  • Must be actively pursuing a BS or MS degree in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or a related field
  • Previous wet lab research experience, including basic knowledge of aseptic technique and laboratory etiquette

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in cloning, genetic engineering, and/or assay development
  • Previous experience with microbial fermentations
  • Understanding of microbial physiology, metabolism, and/or enzyme kinetics
  • Familiarity with analytical instrumentation (HPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS/FID)
