Manus Bio is a next-generation industrial biotechnology company headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts that produces plant-based ingredients.  We use a variety of patented and proprietary technologies to engineer microbes for the production of specialty chemicals, such as food ingredients, agricultural chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.  We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to fill the role of Process Chemist as part of a dynamic downstream process group dedicated to isolating the desired product from fermentation broth. This role will involve developing bench-scale experiments and scaling up to the process-level, as well as understanding chemistries occurring in the process and developing bench-scale models for testing. As such, the ideal candidate will have proven expertise in identifying and characterizing process chemistries occurring under various conditions in chemical processes and bioprocesses. A foundational understanding of downstream process is required. A well-developed understanding of surface chemistry, phase change thermodynamics, and the relevant kinetics that drive the decisions for formulating process development strategy are necessary. A fundamental and deep understanding of chemistry can also help to inform other team members on strategies that may not be obvious in the existing process. This hands-on position requires a desire and ability to work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as the demonstration of a high degree of flexibility, creativity, and initiative applied to the various duties and aspects of the position. This person will be expected to play an integral part of Manus Bio’s process development team located in Augusta, GA.

  • Provide support needed to design, analyze and optimize critical product recovery unit operations associated with Manus Bio’s unique fermentation process by investigating and characterizing the underlying process chemistries associated with the various components.
  • Proactively provide feedback while selecting unit operations and make recommendations on alternative process strategies with beneficial chemistries to consider for enhancing the recovery and quality of the final product.
  • Utilize a variety of relevant analytical instrumentation such as GC-MS, LC-MS, HPLC and other chromatographic techniques, Raman, UV-vis, FTIR and other spectroscopic techniques, DSC, etc. Design and perform bench-scale experiments to support proof-of-concept for proposed unit operations.
  • Contribute to the scale-up activities and process development activities.
  • Develop kinetic models for relevant chemistries occurring in various unit operations – from designed to unexpected (but observed) chemistries.
  • Propose the integration of measurement and characterization techniques not currently existing at our facility.
  • Keep abreast of current literature in relevant chemistry, analytical chemistry, and chemical process and bioprocess technology in order to assess their potential application to Manus Bio’s internal projects.
  • Analyze, write up, and present experimental results to others in the company to expedite the development of our integrated product development in a collaborative team environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry with 4 or more years of postdoctoral or industrial experience in a research and development environment.
  • A deep and fundamental understanding of chemistry is a must. A strong understanding of the chemistries associated with bio-chemical processes is a plus.
  • An appreciation for chemistries at large-scale and in geometries with various gradients (e.g. pH, temperature, pressure, concentrations, etc.) is critical, and the ability to develop bench-scale experiments to model scenarios will be indispensable.
  • Extensive knowledge and proven expertise in process chemistry characterization.
  • A good understanding of fermentation and downstream process scale-up for commercial manufacturing is highly desirable.
  • Expert in analytical techniques.
