Process Control Engineer II

Manus Bio is a next-generation industrial biotechnology company headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts that produces plant-based ingredients.  We use a variety of patented and proprietary technologies to engineer microbes for the production of specialty chemicals, such as food ingredients, agricultural chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.  We are seeking a highly motivated Process Control Engineer II, responsible for providing expertise to develop, configure, and maintain process control strategies for both DCS and PLC system platforms in order to meet plant site Production, Quality, Safety, and Budgetary Goals. This person also provides leadership and direction to operators on control systems and technical skills.


  • Provide configuration and maintenance of the site data historian.
  • Introduce and recommend changes in control schemes that will improve the plant operation.  This would include increased efficiency, higher levels of automation, improved methods of control, and improved information gathering and reporting.
  • Provide process-engineering support.  This includes developing a broad familiarity of the process chemistry and unit operations for each plant.  Duties would include such work assignments as process troubleshooting and yield/capacity improvement.
  • Provide ongoing, formal/informal training for console operators to assure development of good operating practices.  Provide the same type of training for operations support staff, as it applies to the area.  This includes the development of training materials and process simulation.
  • Maintain good documentation practices in accordance to the ISO certification for the plant site.
  • Interface with plant and contract engineering by participating in development of new process design and existing process revision as it pertains to process control software and hardware.
  • Develop a working knowledge of multiple control systems on site.  Provide backup support to other process control personnel.
  • Initiates/supports area capital projects, including scope development, cost justification, control logic, and start-up support.
  • Supports site safety and quality initiatives through participation & leadership in teams, incident/CAR analysis, and follow-up.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. Degree in Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years process control background in chemical, food, or pharmaceutical processes.
  • Must have expertise with DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS) Configuration.
  • Knowledge of process instrumentation, controls engineering, and structured programming techniques.
  • Demonstrated understanding of safety, health, environmental, quality systems, and regulatory compliance guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Experience with Aspen Technologies InfoPlus21.
  • Experience with other control platforms such as PLC/HMI based systems.
  • Variable frequency drive and integration into plant control systems.
  • Expertise with Provox Distributed Control Systems.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • General knowledge of configuration and hardware for distributed control systems.
  • Must be able to follow minimal instructions and support safe work practices.
  • Must be able to function responsibly as a team leader and part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with facility employees, contract personnel, and with outside vendors and customers.
  • Must be able to follow detailed instructions as well as work in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Physical demand requirements are in excess of sedentary work due to equipment inspection and trouble-shooting.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Must be able to wear required protective equipment.
  • Work schedule will vary during shutdowns and other extraordinary conditions.
